Family Portrait
The photo smiles out from the fridge,
as we smile out from the photo,
squinting against the southern French sunset.
It’s our first family holiday for years,
revisiting old haunts, finding new ones for future memories,
enjoying September sun away from glum, grey Britain.
You can tell we’re not thrilled in front of the camera,
but we’re happy to be there, relaxed
in each other’s company, glad of the break,
of the chance to talk and plan, away
from the drudge of the everyday.
Planning really is nicer in Nice.
