Book review: Tony Riches, Essex Tudor Rebel

ESSEX – Tudor Rebel

(Book Two of the Elizabethan Series)

By Tony Riches

Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, is one of the most intriguing men of the Elizabethan period. Tall and handsome, he soon becomes a ‘favourite’ at court, so close to the queen many wonder if they are lovers.

The truth is far more complex, as each has what the other yearns for. Robert Devereux longs for recognition, wealth and influence. His flamboyant naïveté amuses the ageing Queen Elizabeth, like the son she never had, and his vitality makes her feel young.

Robert Devereux’s remarkable true story continues the epic tale of the rise of the Tudors, which began with the best-selling Tudor trilogy and concludes with the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

Review

Another fabulous piece of historical fiction from Tony Riches! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, exploring the life of somebody I had vaguely heard of, but didn’t know the full details. Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex often treads a dangerous path through life at Elizabeth’s court, and I must say, I found the discussions between him and some of the other ‘big names’ of the court were brilliantly portrayed. We meet Cecil, Walsingham, Drake, Raleigh and more – all brought to life on the page.

There are lost loves, lost chances, and sorrow over tragic losses both at home and on the battlefield, and through the eyes of Robert and his men, see how futile some of the battles and other tasks Elizabeth sent her troops on were.

As with Tony Riches’ other books, the characters are well-rounded, and grounded in historical fact (I tend to wander off to the history books after reading a historical fiction novel based on true people!). There are also different ‘sides’ to stories that have been oft-repeated in historical non-fiction, such as a character barging into Queen Elizabeth’s chambers on their arrival at court.

Once again, a highly recommended read, and I can’t wait to see who features in the next book!
