The Knight’s Runaway Maiden
She hates all Warstones.
Can this one win her love?
Balthus of Warstone secretly loved Séverine, even though she was unhappily married to his brute of a brother, then she fled six years ago. Now her husband is dead, Balthus must find Séverine and reclaim her sons as his father’s heirs. Balthus’ desire is to claim her too, and despite his battle-maimed arm and her distrust of his family, he’ll prove he’s a suitor worthy of such a courageous woman…

I’m a huge House MD fan. I’ve watched the whole lot several times and often go to my favourite bits for a quick laugh.
One of the shows that always stuck with me was the episode The Landlord where House has a grumpy landlord who served and lost an arm. Apparently, he had phantom pain for years, and thus was grouchy. So House fixes him with duct tape, a cardboard box, and a mirror.
Now, I’ll never be a medical expert, and writing Medievals means I’ll always have difficulty explaining modern medical practice. Further, I’ll never have access to anything so simple as duct tape, a cardboard box or a mirror.
But I wondered if there was another medical way of healing nerve pain. Something that Medieval healers could stumble upon accidentally even if they couldn’t explain how it worked. After reading medical journal after medical journal, I was able to find a procedure that could work.
So when Balthus, the hero from The Knight’s Runaway Maiden has his hand severed, and then suffers from the residual pain, I had the heroine, Séverine, just so happened to know how to help him.
All the while I had this episode from House MD in my mind.
Unfortunately, I’m not that good of a writer and couldn’t possibly capture that actor’s startled gratefulness even though I watched the snippet over and over. I simply couldn’t quite describe it.
So I, like my Medieval counterpoint, stumbled along the keyboard in the hope that what I did write worked. When you read it, I’d appreciate if you let me know.
