Series: Clan Kendrick, Book #2
Genre: Historical Romance/Scottish
In bestselling author Vanessa Kelly’s irresistible Clan Kendrick series, Christmas in the Highlands means family, celebration—and for one brother, the beginning of a passionate adventure . . .
Being thrown over by the man she expected to marry was humiliating enough. Now that Donella Haddon, grandniece of the Earl of Riddick, has also proven a failure as a nun, she has no choice but to return to her family’s estate. The brawny Highlander sent to escort her is brash, handsome, and the only thing standing between Donella and a gang of would-be kidnappers. But the scandal in her past can’t be so easily outrun . . .
Wealthy widower Logan Kendrick was expecting to meet a plain, pious spinster—not a gorgeous, sharp-tongued lass who can hold her own in any ambush. Though she’s known as the Flower of Clan Graham, Donella is no shrinking violet. In fact, she might be the perfect woman to bring happiness back to his lonely little son’s life, just in time for Christmas. But first he must protect her from ugly gossip and a mysterious threat—and convince her that their wild, unexpected desire is heaven sent.
Oh, Logan… What a great hero to spend a couple of days in the company of!
This is the second book of the Clan Kendrick series, but can be read fairly easily as a standalone novel. There are quite a few family members to keep track of, but luckily, these, and their back-stories, are introduced in a manner which at least makes them easy to keep up with, and allows the focus to stay on Donella and Logan.
Being sent to escort a failed nun home to her family should have been an easy task for Logan Kendrick, but with kidnappers and scandal following in Donella Haddon’s wake, it’s far from straightforward. I loved reading the sparks fly between this pair, as they both sought to be as respectable as possible in what became an intolerable situation. Outwardly, that is…
There are plenty of times when I’ve found myself screaming at a book’s hero or heroine to just tell their potential partner what they are thinking, and “get on with it” – here, their motives for not leaping into anything are far more thought-through, each keen to avoid scandal and heartache. The fact that Donella is also no weakling makes this an engaging and entertaining read, which I just could not put down.
Everything being set against a Scottish backdrop, at Christmas too, is the icing on a wonderfully-written cake! I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to continue their festive reading with a spot of historical romance…
