Review

King John is on an unsteady throne, and Britain is heading towards potential political turmoil, and in the midst of this, a good indication of how marriage could truly be in the medieval world, as Constance meets Matthew properly, five years after they were wed! Their initial meeting gets off to a bumpy start, but Matthew is indeed valiant, and his attitude to his wife soon starts to emerge. It’s a rocky road ahead for them, with Matthew’s father firmly in the camp of King John, as well as stirring up bad memories from the past for Constance’s husband, just when the two of them should be taking the time to get to know each other at the start of their ‘official’ marriage.

I really enjoyed reading this, being a fan of the period, and it was refreshing to read, in Matthew, a more measured medieval husband, as well as a strong woman, albeit within tight confines of the time. I’d certainly recommend it to anyone wanting fiction from a slightly earlier period in our history.

About Jenni

Jenni Fletcher is Scottish by birth, but now lives in Yorkshire where she writes Medieval, Roman, Victorian and Regency romance novels. She studied English at Cambridge and Hull University and now teaches Creative Writing at a small university in the north of England. Her favourite Jane Austen novel is Persuasion and her favourite Brontë is Anne. If she had to choose a romantic hero it would be John Thornton, but maybe that’s just because she’s northern.
